Built in 1907 by A. W. McCollum, this Classical Revival styled building is adorned with glazed terra cotta. Shortly after it was built, the building was sold to L. D. Lowell for $15,000.

Aura Washington McCollum was born August 13, 1837, and is credited as being the first white male born in McHenry County. He was often referred to as, “Nunda’s Grand Old Man.” L. D. Lowell was a local attorney who kept an office in one of the second floor suites of the McCollum Building until 1938, long after he sold the building. L.D. Lowell served two years as state’s attorney. He was the city attorney for Crystal Lake for many years.

The McCollum Building has been home to many of Crystal Lake’s earliest businesses including the Crystal Lake Herald and Heisler’s Harness Shop (later Heisler’s Bootery). John and Lillian Heisler purchased the building in 1924. Here, the Heisler family operated their business until 1966, when they moved to their current location on Williams Street.

In 1975, the Heisler family sold the building to Judith Svalander. Judith owns a dance studio known as Judith Svalander School of Ballet, which is still dancing today!
