Q: Tell us about the “Green” in The Green Read!

The Green Read is a project of the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County. The books are all donated, and the store is staffed by volunteers. Proceeds from the book sales help support environmental projects here in McHenry County, so buying our gently used books is a win-win: you get great books at a great price (while keeping them out of the landfill), AND you help the environment in McHenry County!

Q: What are your most popular genres?

Children’s books, fiction, and mysteries are our most popular genres. We have also become known for the high quality new puzzles we offer as well.

Q: What’s the history of the space you’re in?

The space the Green Read is in has been home to used bookstores for over 35 years, first Kep’s Paperback Exchange, then Twice Told Tales, and finally Buy Local Books before The Green Read opened in 2018. When we brought in our own stock of gently used books and reorganized the shelves, the store took on a completely new look. With the goal of making it a bright, inviting place for people to browse, we painted the walls a cheery yellow, added comfortable seating, and often have a puzzle in progress on one of our tables for customers to enjoy. We are staffed by a wonderful team of passionate and dedicated volunteers that love to “talk books”.

Q: What type of reader should check out The Green Read?

Readers who enjoy a treasure hunt! While some people look for specific books and are thrilled when they find them, many of our customers are just looking for a book that sparks their interest. Who knows … a book you find on our shelves may become your newest favorite read!
